Change Is Hard

I've known for a long time exactly what color I wanted to paint our kitchen/dining room. At least I thought I did until Jeff brought home all of the samples to choose from....many, many of them! Soon, I couldn't even picture in my mind what I wanted to begin with. It was so frustrating. On top of that, we also decided to buy new wood blinds. Jeff picked them out to match the cabinets, but I was worried about matching them to the window trim. We finally decided on the lighter ones and were pleased with how well it all blended.

I wish we would have been as pleased with the finished results of the new paint job. We narrowed the choice down to two colors...one that I wanted and one that he wanted. I finally gave in and decided to go with his...a little darker and redder than I wanted, but with potential. There are times when I really, really like it and other times when I think, "What have we done?" We aren't sure if we'll stick with it or head to the store for more color samples. "sigh" I don't know which is worse!

Wait 3 days and if you still don't like it, repaint. If you don't like it after that long, you're never going to. Might as well get something you do like.

Humm... I love the color red, so I hope this isn't bad to say, but I hear you shouldn't paint a kitchen red as it is too high of intensity in color. It actually makes you feel high strung in an already high strung room. That maybe will be hard to want to spend time in there. The rule of thumb is to go with softer more subdued colors in bedrooms and kitchens and play with more color in a living room where you want to be more lively. I personally would go with a soft yellow or even a very light green. Anyway, good luck with the decisions! The paint job looks really good though!

Oh, and you could also ask a local paint guy what is a good complimentary color to your cabinets. The other problem with the red is it dulls out the cabinets instead of setting them apart and accenting them. I hope I am being helpful and not annoying. I have really been studying design a lot and don't have my own place to practice on so I like to help, even if it isn't needed. lol So sorry if it is irritating.

Thanks for the advice..both of you. It's funny because the color wasn't even supposed to be red, though I told Jeff that it was going to come off as red. The color I wanted was a rusty brown..light color. Jeff didn't want it because he said that the cabinets would get lost in it. He is thinking now of a mustard yellow, but that's what I want the play/school room in, but we could go with different shades. I am going with earthy colors in my house and I just don't think that this goes. "sigh"
Thanks for the advice...we will play around with it until we are satisfied :). I wonder if my sister will come back and help us paint again!

I also like the earthy colors, but my sis just painted her den a lettuce color of green and her workout room a bright vibrant orange. It looks amazing in her home! I would not be brave enough to paint any room in my house those colors for fear that I would not like it at all. You can always paint over it, if you are not satisfied hon, that is the great thing about paint. I do love those blinds though.

I don't like red but think this looks terrific...though I'm sorta wondering if it's hard to live with? Thanks for stopping by & visiting. Always nice to *meet* another homeschooler. :)

I really want to do a red in our kitchen. Our dining room is a dark olive kinda green. Have you decided to keep it or change it?

Hi Carrie,
I think we are going to keep the color. The more it dried, the more it lost its read look...it is more of a rusty orange like we intended now. I guess Perri was right to recommend that we wait a few days. So, yes, I think we are going to stick with it, at least for a while!
Thanks for the note.

Nope...no wallpaper here. Ten years ago, we slapped wallpaper on everything...everyone did. It's what we are trying to get rid of now. Thanks for the tip, though..any reason you are anonymous?
