Church Crawfish Boil

I took the kids swimming at our wellness center on Friday then spent a beautiful Saturday outside. Carter had baseball practice from 11:00 until 3:00. Jeff is the head coach for the team this year. It's a lot of responsibility and takes a lot of time, but he is enjoying it so much. Madison and I love to sit and watch them practice while Patrick runs around the ballpark with his friends. After practice, we had a crawfish boil with some friends from our church. We ate crawfish until we couldn't hold anymore...I know I did...then played for the rest of the evening. Carter and his friends climbed everything within reach...the playground equipment, trees, fences, etc. Patrick and his friend chased the girls around and hung out. Jeff, Madison, and I played baseball with some of the kids. My friend, Rebecca, showed us all that she could indeed hit and catch while I only showed them why I chose to be a cheerleader for 7 years instead of playing ball. We had a great time. It's so nice to gather with those that we see every Sunday in church...to really get to know them on a more personal level. We are blessed with an amazing Sunday School class. We are close enough to really share our problems and joys and to know that there is a true concern for one another. I look forward to many more days of fellowship with them!

St. Patrick's Day

We started our St. Patrick's Day with a green breakfast....green eggs! I think the kids were all a little hesitant at first to eat the eggs, but they all said that they tasted the same with the green dye in them. We discussed the potato as one of Ireland's main food crops and the history of how it was brought to Europe from the New World. Then, we had cheesy potato soup for lunch.

After school, Madison put together a great scavenger hunt to do outside and a treasure hunt for inside. I was impressed with how she planned and managed it. I just sat back and watched. It was so much fun!I remember as a kid in school I used to tell everyone that they couldn't pinch me because my last name was Green. Well, that doesn't work with the kids, even though it is still my middle name. I had to wear green like everyone else!

A Little Weekend Science

This is what I caught my boys doing with their company today. I guess they don't get enough Science during the week :).

Science and Sewing

We've been studying plants in Science. To demonstrate transpiration in plants, we did an experiment on a geranium. We watered the plant then covered the base of it with a plastic bag to prevent evaporation of the water from the soil. We weighed the plant five times within a week to see how much water it would lose through its leaves. Here are the results. The plant lost a total of 7 oz. in one week.

Our sweet potato finally started sprouting...and sprouting...and sprouting. We have it in the windowsill and cannot believe how much it grows in a day.

Madison is still enjoying her sewing. She surprised us by cutting her own pattern and making a pair of pants for her American Girl doll. Then, she made a shirt to go with it. I hand sewed a skirt for her doll to show her how to do it, but I'm not sure how she figured out the pants and shirt.

Carter was interested in what Madison was doing, so she started teaching him how to sew. He was so excited to just be able to sew two pieces of material together. Then, Madison cut a pattern out for him to make some underwear for his Build-A-Bear monkey. She would tell him where to sew and thread his needle, then let him do the sewing. I know sewing is a "girl" thing, but I was not going to stop Carter from doing something that he enjoyed because of that. Madison is very much a girl, but she doesn't hesitate to go outside and play ball or play in the mud with the boys. It hasn't made her a tomboy, so I figure a little sewing won't hurt Carter. He just loves to get into whatever is going on around him..that's what I love about him. I was proud of their finished project!

I told Madison that once she learns to hand sew that I would let her use my serger for her projects. I remember spending hours with Vicki sewing projects by hand for our dolls and stuffed animals when we were kids. I love seeing my kids to it now. I can't wait to see what Madison does with a serger!
